Our Chief Medical Officer was in the trauma bay long before he was in the boardroom. This week, that experience is on the national stage.
Congratulations to Dr. Alexander Evans, MD, MBA, FACS, co-author of new research presented at the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress 2026 in Washington.
The Howard University Hospital team studied 10,151 e-scooter trauma admissions nationwide. What they found:
→ Admissions rose 92% in two years, from 2,311 in 2021 to 4,430 in 2023.→ 16% of these patients needed the ICU, and 11% needed surgery.→ Helmet use was documented in only 12% of cases, and it was linked to lower odds of ICU admission.→ About 72% of patients were ages 18 to 64.
That last number is worth an employer's attention. This is a fast-growing category of preventable injury, and it's landing mostly on working-age adults.
